Here are some jobs that you might wish to consider undertaking during this month:
Plant some nice pot displays for winter colour with plants such as cyclamen, winter flowering pansies, Viloa’s and skimmia.
Plant your evergreen shrubs and conifer hedges whilst the soil is still slightly warm.
Plant some spring bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and fritillaries.
Remove any plant pot saucers and raise the pots up off the ground using pot feet to prevent the pots becoming water logged during winter.
Wrap straw and fleece around any tree ferns and banana plants to protect them from winter frosts.
Take any hardwood cuttings from any shrubs and ornamental tree’s ready for next year.
Empty any hanging baskets or summer pots and ensure that you compost the contents.
Collect your seeds from hardy perennials such as achillea, Astrantia and achillea. Ensure that these are sown immediately.
Lift and pot tender perennials to protect them over winter. Varieties include cosmos, coleus and gazanias.
Reduce the height of roses to prevent windrock which will damage the plants over winter.
Lift cannas lillies to avoid any frost damage. Ensure you dry off the tubers, then store them in a dark, cool place until spring.
Transplant deciduous shrubs and plants that have either outgrown their position in the garden or are that in the wrong place
Ensure leaves are regularly cleared from your lawn to prevent them damaging it when they get wet.
