Jobs To Do In Your Garden During August
11 Aug 2024
Prune your rambling roses, by removing up to a third of the stems that have finished flowering and tie the rest on to some supports.
Keep your hanging baskets and pots flowering by regularly watering them and dead heading. You can add some feed regularly too.
Collect any seeds as they ripen from your plants such as love in the mist, sweet peas and aquilegias. Ensure you undertake this task on a dry day.
Ensure you water your rhododendrons and camelias well during August as their flower buds are forming.
Keep your perennials such as dahlias deadheaded to encourage constant blooms during the month of August.
Trim your Lavenders once they have finished flowering to help maintain a nice compact shape and avoid cutting into any old wood.
Take some cuttings of woody herb type plants such as hyssop and Lavenders. Make sure you choose non flowering shoots for your cuttings.
Mow or strim wild flower areas now that these types of flowers have scattered their seeds.
Plant your autumn bulbs such as nerines and colchicums in your borders or in pots.
Sow any annuals in sunny spots to provide some nice early colour ready for next year.
Arrange for someone to water your hanging baskets and pots if you are going away on holiday during August.
Take some cuttings from your penstemons, ensuring that you choose healthy non-flowering shoots.
Remove your spent hardy annuals that you do not want to self seed within your garden.
Reduce how often you are cutting the grass and increase the cutting height of your mower to help keep the grass long and lush during the hot and dry period of August.
